A quick overview of motorhome insurance

Here are a few key points on the subject of motorhome insurance:

  • motorhome policies may typically contain restrictions on the minimum ages (and possibly the experience levels, as dictated by the time a licence has been held) of drivers;
  • some larger and specialist motorhomes may require special driving licence qualifications;
  • even if your motorhome is currently ‘off the road’, it may still require the minimum legal insurance – unless you have formally declared it to be ‘off the road’ to the DVLA and completed an appropriate SORN notification that involves handing in your tax disc;
  • some insurance policies for camper vans and motorhomes may make the use of tracking devices mandatory – others may offer financial incentives for doing so;
  • policies may differ in terms of their requirements as to where you may or may not park up your motorhome overnight – some may require the use of formally approved sites with the implication being that locations such as lay-bys may not be covered;
  • you may also be able to obtain a reduction of premium if you use additional security devices to cut down the risks of burglary or theft;
  • policies typically do not cover fridge contents;
  • motorhome insurance may cover your contents as well as fixtures and fittings, however, it might be prudent to carefully check the situation with regards to external items such as awnings, satellite dishes and portaloos etc. These may need to be stated separately on your insurance policy schedule and may have their own set of terms and conditions attached to them;
  • some policies may cover European driving as standard (often called continental cover), others may also do so but impose mileage or duration restrictions – some motorhome insurance may not include it at all ‘as standard’.
