Caravan Insurance Obligations
With the rise of “staycationing”, thousands of people across the country are catching onto the idea of going on a caravan holiday instead of heading abroad. Many people are happy to rent a caravan on a holiday park but for others there’s simply nothing better than having their own vehicle to come and go as they please, and if you’re thinking of taking the plunge here are a few caravan insurance obligations that you need to bear in mind.
The first thing to note is that, technically, this type of insurance isn’t a legal requirement. However, it is a legal obligation if you’re going to be towing it on public roads (so unless you’re planning on keeping it in your driveway forever then you need to check the insurance implications), but many car insurance policies will offer this additional cover as standard. As long as you check the small print then you may not even need a separate policy for your caravan, letting you get on the road without any hassle.
But, this isn’t always the way to go. While your car insurance policy could well cover your caravan against any third party claims, the caravan itself isn’t insured. This means that it’s often wise to get additional cover anyway, particularly when you think about how much caravans can cost – they can take a huge chunk out of your savings, and with caravan theft being on the rise you’d be wise to get a separate policy to protect your investment.
So, although caravan insurance isn’t technically a legal obligation, you’d still be wise to invest in separate cover. You wouldn’t think of not insuring your home so why would you run the risk of losing out when it comes to your caravan? Make sure to think about contents insurance too so that your caravan and any possessions are properly protected, and you can get on the road without having to worry about a thing.
