Evaluating caravan insurers

There may be a temptation to presume that all caravan insurers are more or less the same and that, as a result, all caravan insurance is more or less the same also.

That presumption would be a grave error.

The actual position is that caravan insurers vary considerably in terms of their attitudes towards caravan insurance and the caravan insurance policies they are providing.

This is something that may be best illustrated via examples.

Some insurance providers may place a high value on indications of what they may call policyholder responsibility and maturity. They may interpret that to be evidenced by behaviours such as belonging to a motoring organisation or an owners’ club.

Such insurers may view these types of policyholders to be a lower risk and as such, they may reward them with discounts on the premium, often referred to caravan club insurance discounts.

As another example, some insurers will place a high value on the use of additional security devices such as locks and alarms.

Once again, they may offer discounts for policyholders that meet certain requirements in these areas (note that some insurers may demand the use of things such as wheel clamps and hitchlocks as mandatory in certain circumstances).

As a final example, some insurers may have a rather more relaxed and therefore perhaps lower cost, policy with respect to the use of your caravan outside of the UK.

If you enjoy continental trips then that difference of having continental cover may be something that may prove to be very important to you, whereas if you use your caravan only in the UK, it may not.

The key message to come out of this is that caravan insurers are not all the same nor are the insurance policies that they sell. A little shopping around may be advisable in order to ensure that you have a policy suitable for your needs,
