Facts to consider when looking for insurance for a caravan

One of the first things you have to take into account is the level of insurance you want for your caravan. If you have a small second hand model that you only use for the odd week in the summer then you might just want to consider the least amount of insurance which is third party liability protection. However if you have a brand new home away from home with all the mod cons then fully comprehensive insurance for a caravan may be needed.

A fully comprehensive policy would provide many different levels of protection for your pride and joy which would give great peace of mind. You would for example have protection against fire, theft, vandalism, possibly liability protection and much more. If your caravan is static then you could to check to see if storm damage was included in the policy and if you travel around and intend leaving the UK then European protection is another consideration.

European protection would allow you the peace of mind that if you broke down while in Europe your policy would help pay for recovery repairs and alternative accommodation if you had to stay in  hotel. You would need to check the small print of any policy you were considering taking out as there may be a limit of the amount of days coverage you would have for Europe. There may also be limits as to the amount of time the policy would pay out for alternative accommodation and how much per day.

Whether you are looking for static caravan insurance or insurance for a caravan for touring then you may have to pay an excess on the policy. This is the amount that you would need to find out of your own pocket if you were to have to make a claim. There will be a minimum amount of excess but you could offer to pay a higher amount of excess and this may help to keep down the cost of the insurance. However you would have to bear in mind that this sum would have to come out of your own pocket as a cash lump sum and if you were to have to make more than one claim in the same year you could lose out.

When looking for insurance for a caravan the safer your caravan is the cheaper the insurance could be. For example if you are insuring a touring caravan if it is safely kept under lock and key in a garage when not in use it would be safer than being parked elsewhere and you may be able to make savings. If your caravan is static then the more security conscious your site owner is the more savings you could make on your insurance. For example if the site is walled in and has a locked gate and there are plenty of lights on site then the safer your caravan will be. You can install security lighting on the caravan; have window and door locks and an alarm fitted. All of these additions can help to keep down the cost of the insurance quotes.
