Flood Risk Insurance for Static Caravans
Recent years have seen an influx of flooding, both in the UK and abroad. You only have to put the news on to see evidence of the latest disaster, and that understandably makes it difficult to arrange things like caravan insurance. If your caravan is on a site that’s at risk from flooding it could seriously affect your premiums and your chance of getting the necessary cover, but why is that and what can be done about it?
The simple fact is that, if your caravan is on a site that’s suffered from flooding before or has the potential to do so (if it’s situated in a flood plain, for example) then you’re going to find it difficult to find the right cover. Insurers are going to be apprehensive about offering cover in these areas for the simple reason that there’s a much higher likelihood of you making a claim, and if you’ve suffered from flooding before (and have had to make a claim as a result) you could well see your premiums rocket.
You can’t always blame the insurers though. They don’t like to stand the thought of losing money, and if you’ve only paid a few premiums before you make a claim then they’re highly likely to lose out because of it. They need to make some of this money back, and they’ll do it by raising your premiums.
The best thing you can do is look around for a site that isn’t affected by flooding or, if that’s not possible, do your research to find the best deal. Even with a flood risk you’ll still find that some insurers are able to offer better prices than others, so it’s worth doing your research to see what you can find.
But, don’t be surprised if you get refused. Finding a quote when you’re in an area that’s known for being at risk of flooding is incredibly difficult, so you need to be prepared that you may not find one or that, if you do, you’ll have to pay high premiums for the privilege.
Ultimately, flood risk insurance for static caravans will be hard to come by. You should consider moving your static caravan to a “safer” area if you want to be confident that you’ll be insured, and if not be prepared for a great deal of searching and very high premiums. Unfortunately, that’s the best you can hope for.
