Safe Caravan Towing Procedures
If there’s one thing that any novice caravan owner will be worried about, it’s towing their precious new purchase. There’s often a perception that towing a caravan is incredibly difficult and, at times, dangerous, but if you know the principles of safe caravan towing then it needn’t give you too many sleepless nights.
The first thing you need to think about is the combined weight of your car and caravan and whether or not it’s safe to drive. It’s recommended that you shouldn’t exceed an 85% caravan-to-car ratio unless you want to be driving unsafely, but don’t worry if you need a bit of help working out the specs ? a quick search online will present you with tables so you can work out the ratio according to your specific model of car. Another important consideration is that the caravan is hooked up correctly, and that needs a high-quality tow bar that’s been properly fitted.
Then you need to think about what happens when you’re on the road itself. Always drive at a safe speed (and never more than 60mph if you want to be driving legally) and make sure not to turn corners too quickly unless you want to become unstable. Make sure that your possessions have been securely tied down or put away when you’re driving so they don’t move around, and above all make sure to be an ultra-careful driver when you’re towing a caravan behind you.
So, for safe caravan towing, all it takes is adherence to a few simple rules ? make sure you’ve got the weight sorted, ensure your caravan is properly attached to your vehicle, and always drive carefully. If you do these things you can look forward to getting to your chosen destination in one piece, and that’s the most important consideration of all.
