Selecting caravan insurers

You may have seen that there are significant numbers of options available in terms of selecting caravan insurers.

So, how does one choose between them?

Perhaps the first thing to note and to be a little cautious about, is presuming that this selection is all about price.

Nobody is likely to dispute that price is important – the typical caravanner wants to spend as much of their budget on actually enjoying their caravan as they can and probably don’t eagerly look forward to buying their insurance each year.

Yet the whole point of caravan insurance is to protect the investment you’ve made in your caravan, should the worst happen. Is it sensible, therefore, to approach your selection of caravan insurers simply on the basis of who is offering the cheapest prices?

A cheap policy may, of course, offer absolutely superb cover – but looking at the price alone won’t tell you that.

The only real option, in terms of security, is to read carefully through the policy’s cover provisions.

To take an example, some insurers may offer policies that have very restricted annual mileage rates included as standard. If you’re an owner who really enjoys using their caravan to the maximum extent possible, then such restrictions may prove irritating, even if the policy is one of the cheapest around.

Yes, it may be possible to pay extra to increase the allowable annual mileage but that may undermine the assumption that the insurance is the cheapest around. It might have been preferable to search for a policy that gave you the mileage cover you needed, as standard.

That, in fact, may have proven to be more cost-effective than purchasing what appeared to be the cheapest cover.

There may be many more such examples, all of which may indicate that looking only at the price may be ill advised.

So, when selecting caravan insurers, it’s typically a good idea to look at the totality of what they’re offering. It may save you both money and grief in the longer term.
