Tips on Importing a Motorhome

Motorhomes are becoming an increasingly common sight on the UK’s roads, and it isn’t hard to see their appeal. They’re convenient, practical and mean you can head on your holiday whenever and wherever you like, and these days many motorhome enthusiasts are opting for the intrinsically American creation – the RV. A lot of people are looking into the possibility of importing a motorhome from the US straight over here, and it doesn’t have to be as difficult as you might think.

Your first step will of course be to find the motorhome that you’re looking for, and with many American companies producing motorhomes of the highest spec possible you’ll be spoilt for choice. Then you need to look into shipping costs, customs duty and VAT, and you also need to bear in mind the specifics of what needs to be done when it gets over here. Because of the sheer size of many American motorhomes you need to make sure that it’ll be legal to drive on public roads, and you could find it needs some form of conversions when it gets over here as well as changes to its registration.

You’ll also need to make sure that it’s registered in the UK and that it’s fully insured, and this is where yet more research needs to come in. Finding imported motorhome insurance will of course be trickier than finding policies for UK-based models, but it doesn’t mean you have to lose out. There are plenty of specialist companies that will be able to accommodate your needs and some have specific expertise with motorhome imports, so it’s wise to look around to see what you can find. Once you’ve got imported motorhome insurance there’s nothing left to do but get out on the open road, so don’t be put off by the perceived hassle involved – if you want an American motorhome, importing it could be easier than you think.
