Touring Caravan Insurance Cover

There’s no better feeling than being able to set off on your holiday as soon as the desire hits you, and with a touring caravan that’s exactly what you’ll be able to do. But, don’t get too carried away – with caravans often costing up to £20,000 (and beyond) it’s important that you’ve got the necessary cover in place, so just what are the requirements of touring caravan insurance?

The first thing to remember is that you don’t necessarily need a separate caravan insurance policy. You’ll of course need to be insured if you’re going to tow your caravan on public roads but many car insurance policies already include this level of cover, and if you check the small print and if necessary add the cover as an addition to your policy then you’ll already be legally able to get on the roads.

But, this should be the absolute minimum. Although this is all that’s legally required it’s important to remember that it only covers you against any liability in terms of third party damage, with the caravan itself being totally unprotected. Given the expense of many caravans these days (and indeed the value of possessions on it) you’d be wise to opt for a higher level of cover, and essentially you’ll need a separate caravan insurance policy to give you the protection that you need.

This specialist insurance should cover your caravan against year-round damage, both when it’s in use and when it’s being stored. Ideally it should include protection against fire, theft, accidental damage and public liability, and you might want to go further than that to look into European cover (which is often included on a limited basis), legal expenses, personal effects insurance and new for old cover – while some companies offer these things as standard, for others you’ll have to pay slightly more. Touring caravan insurance can offer valuable peace of mind, so make sure to consider a higher level of cover and you can get on the road in confidence.
