Who Invented the Caravan?
The history of caravans dates back centuries. Their origins can be traced back to the Romani people, traveling gypsies who spent much of their life in horse-drawn trailers, although things have changed a great deal since then. The first “leisure trailer” was built in 1880 by the Bristol Carriage Company, and its birth arguably heralded the beginnings of the modern caravan that we know and love today.
This first caravan was built for Dr W Gordon-Stables who christened it the Wanderer. The trailer was 18ft long, based on the design of Bible Wagons and was a horse-drawn vehicle – in fact, horses continued to be the primary mode of propulsion for caravans until 1919, when the first recorded incident of a car towing a caravan occurred.
Caravans have changed a lot since those days. They became incredibly popular in America during the 1920s and continued to thrive in the UK, with many improvements being made over the years to make them more liveable and convenient. RVs soon became common sights on American roads as did pop-up trailers, campers and even trailer tents – the choice on offer continued to expand to offer something for everyone, whether they wanted the convenience of a smaller vehicle or the luxury of a fully-equipped motorhome.
These days the distinction seems to lie between static caravans and those that are seen on the road, and here the choices are endless. Trailer tents, RVs, motorhomes, tourer caravans and many more besides are all readily available, with numerous models being on offer to appeal to all tastes, preferences and budgets.
Caravans have come a long way since their humble beginnings and are enjoying a surge of popularity once again, thanks in no small part to the recent rise in staycationing, providing the perfect holiday for people that want the combination of flexibility and convenience. They offer all the creature comforts of home and are ready and waiting to be enjoyed at a moment’s notice, and what was once used primarily for transportation purposes has now become a valid holiday option in its own right.
The history of caravans is incredibly diverse, and while they were first used by travellers it’s fair to say that the Bristol Carriage Company invented the type of caravan that we know today. Indeed, this vehicle still exists as a prime example of early caravan design – it gave birth to the modern day caravan, and for that we can be thankful.
