Your caravan insurance policy and the small print
No modern reputable provider of a caravan insurance policy will attempt to ‘catch out’ policyholders by the use of obscure terms and conditions – even so, it may be advisable to watch for the following:
- the in-season location – some policies may have clauses that stipulate where you may or may not locate your caravan when it is in use (e.g. a static may need to be located on a licensed site that has full services attached);
- statements of your claim obligations – for example, you may be obliged to support any claim for theft of contents with evidence that you reported the crime to police within a specified period of time;
- the closed season location – you may be obliged to store your caravan off the public road or sometimes in a secure location;
- closed season obligations – if your caravan is not in use (even if this is in the summertime) you may find that with some insurance for caravans, it is obligatory to drain down all water and heating systems if you wish your caravan insurance policy to remain in force;
- the use of certain security devices such as, hitchlocks and wheel clamps, may be obligatory under the terms of some caravan insurance policies;
- the requirements for static caravan insurance may include the obligation to ensure that the caravan is fully jacked-off of its wheels and secured in-place by a specified anchoring method;
- you may find that external items such as satellite dishes, picnic furniture and barbecues, may or may not be covered;
- ultimately, it is necessary to read your caravan insurance policy carefully and take good note of any points listed under the heading of ‘terms and conditions’.
